February 6th, Waltham, MA, 2019; GPS are proud to announce Andrew Rent as the 2002 GPS National Team Male Player of the Year.
Andrew and the 02 Boys travelled to California to compete in the Surf Cup where they put on a terrific showing. They finished the group stage undefeated with impressive 4-0 and 3-1 wins. They would come up against the tournament’s home side, San Diego Surf, in the semifinal where they would earn a dramatic 2-1 victory.
A 2-0 win in the final saw the 02 Boys capture the Surf Cup title for their respective age group and bracket, adding to the 04 Boys Surf Cup title. On the way to the title, the 02 Boys squared off against four US Soccer DA teams and won.
Andrew currently plays for GPS Maine where he captained his side to the 2018 US Club Soccer State Cup title. He was also named the 2018 Maine Class A Player of the Year and a High School All-American as well.
The GPS National Team Male and Female Player of the Year awards will both be announced at the GPS National Team Camp in Rock Hill, South Carolina this upcoming weekend.
Quote from Andrew: “This past season with the national team was probably the most fun I've had since I first started a couple years ago. I traveled to the Youth Cup in Germany where we finished third in the 7-a-side tournament. While it would've been awesome to win, the experience the boys and I got over there was just incredible. From training with Bayern coaches, to meeting some players, and then watching Bayern play were all so enjoyable. I also went to the Surf Cup this past summer and this was also a great experience as not only did we win, but I thought we played really well and the group of boys we have on the 02s is just great. I hope that this year we can go back to the SuperCup and compete to get back to the final and come out on top this time around. I'm very humbled to receive this recognition and appreciate my teammates and coaches for all they've done for me.”
