December 18th, Waltham, MA, 2018; The GPS Memorial Day Tournament is a LARGE event. In fact, the Memorial Day Tournament is the largest single weekend youth sports tournament in the United States.
An event this large is bound to have an effect on the surrounding area but the footprint from the 2018 edition was far larger than even we could have anticipated.
The event had such a major impact on the area that it was named as a 2018 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism winner.
The Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism is awarded by Sports Destination Management, a leading publication in the sports event planning field that aims to provide support tools and location strategies.
The GPS Memorial Day Tournament was crowned in the Large Market category alongside 7 other events such as the NCAA Final Four held in San Antonio and the NFL Draft held in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The Memorial Day event has been growing exponentially and the leap from 2017 to 2018 cannot be understated. The event saw a 30% rise in participation, leading to a growth in economic impact of around $1.5 million bringing the 2018 event’s total impact to $5 million.
“To be recognized alongside some of the biggest and best events this country has to offer in the sporting world is very humbling,” said National Tournaments Director James Hamblin. “We are honored to accept the award and we will continue to provide a first class soccer experience for our 1000+ teams over the Memorial Day Weekend.”
