02 and 04 National Teams Win in Cali

July 31st Waltham, MA, 2018; The GPS National teams enjoyed success at the San Diego Surf Cup for the first time yesterday in the Golden State.

The 2002 and 2004 Boys National teams were crowned Champions in the Super Black and Super White brackets respectively after overcoming some of the top teams on the West Coast and beyond.

Running for almost 40 years the Surf Cup is considered one of the top youth soccer tournaments in the USA and attracts more than 500 college coaches and scouts.  Since 2016, GPS has sent two boys and girls National teams to the event during off years from International competition.

The 2002s came through tough opposition in the group stages with a game to spare before a dramatic victory over home side San Diego Surf DA in the semis.  In the finals they overcame, Pacific Northwest powerhouse Crossfire Premier by 2-0 through goals from Jose Hazim (GPS PR) and Jack Cloherty (GPS MA). Overall the 2002s defeated four US Development Academy teams on their way to the title.

It was equally as impressive and probably dramatic for the 2004 team who came past California North side MVLA on penalty kicks in yesterday’s final. Ryon Constable (GPS NH) was the goalscorer in the final but the hero was Carter Nunnery of Discoveries SC and GPS Carolina who made four saves in the shootout.

The GPS girls teams were unfortunate not to advance to the final stages.  The 2004 girls and 2002 girls both put on strong performances against excellent opposition in the group stages but fell on the wrong side of some tough results.

Both teams bounced back in their final games with a 4-0 win over Arsenal Colorado for the 02s and a 2-2 tie for the 04s against San Diego SC Navy.

The Surf trip wins is added to the 2005 Girls Gothia Cup (Sweden) triumph earlier in the summer and a runner’s up spot in the Foyle Cup (Northern Ireland) for the 2005 Boys.
