02 Boys & Girls, 03 Boys and 05 Boys Claim New England NPL Titles in Lancaster

June 11th, Waltham, MA: Sunday was a day of celebration for the club as four GPS teams claimed New England NPL Championships at Progin Park in Lancaster.

The GPS MA Elite Red 02 Boys, GPS MA Elite Red 02 Girls, GPS MA Elite Red 03 Boys and the GPS MA Elite Red 05 Boys all took to the field yesterday filled with hope and left with winner’s medals in hand.

The GPS MA Elite Red 02 Boys, under coach Andy Prosser, were looking to complete their League and Cup double and managed to do so winning 4-1 against a strong NEFC side.

They wasted no time applying the pressure to the NEFC backline and managed to find the breakthrough off of a corner met at the back post by Diego Garcia only 6 minutes into the game.

Refusing to be content with the 1 goal lead, Prosser’s boys continued to apply pressure finding comfortable space to operate in out wide.

A cross into the box from Diego Garcia found the feet of Michael DeTuits who comfortably slotted the ball away giving the boys a 2-0 lead only 6 minutes later, a lead that they would never look back from.

It was a GPS vs GPS affair for the U15 Boys Final that saw the GPS MA Elite Red 03 Boys take on their GPS MA Elite White 03 Boys counterparts.

The GPS MA Elite White squad took an early lead only a few minutes into the game. The GPS MA Elite Red Boys, looking to overturn the deficit quickly, settled into the game rather well and hit the Elite White backline for 2 quick counter attacking goals in as many minutes halfway through the opening half.

The GPS MA Elite Red 03 Boys would add another goal just before halftime and while the Elite White team would play an impressive 2nd half never giving up while providing a threat throughout, it was too much for them to overcome as the Elite Red won 4-1 in the end.

The GPS MA Elite Red 02 Girls played in perhaps the most dramatic fixture of the weekend against a stout FCUSA side.

Full time and extra time brought with it excellent defensive play from both sides, but the formidable defenses meant neither could find the breakthrough setting up another penalty shootout for the girls, this being just a week after they suffered a heartbreaking loss to in the State Cup Finals on penalties.

The girls managed to exercise their demons though, winning the shootout in the 6th round of kicks. The final kicks for both teams heavily involved GPS goalkeeper Izzy Shih who saved FCUSA’s attempt before stepping up to take the do-or-die shot herself, a shot she promptly buried.

The GPS MA Elite Red 05 Boys took on the Spirit of Liverpool 05 Boys team in the last final of the day for GPS squads.

It was a tough fought game, with GPS falling behind 1-0 early on in the first half but 2 goals in the second half saw the boys through where they joined the other Andy Prosser coached team in the winner’s circle.

Teams have now qualified for the following competitions:
