May 30, 2018, Waltham, MA: More than 1,000 teams convened in Massachusetts this weekend for the annual GPS Memorial Day Soccer Tournament. The largest one-weekend soccer event in the United States kicked off with games in Lancaster, MA at 5pm on Friday and continued throughout the holiday weekend with the final champions crowned late Monday afternoon.
This annual event, now in its 11th year, marks the conclusion of the Spring soccer season and offers players from U10 to U19 an opportunity to face off against top-notch competition from around the country. The Memorial Day Tournament offers an especially great opportunity for players looking to take their game to the college level. Roughly 200 college coaches were in attendance at this year’s event hoping to find the next wave of talented players to fill their roster.
The majority of games were played in two locations; The Hopkinton YMCA Complex (12 fields) in
Hopkinton, MA played host to the younger age groups and the MYSA Complex (16 fields) in Lancaster, MA played host to the older age groups. However, games were played at 36 beautiful turf and grass venues all around the state of Massachusetts throughout the weekend.
“The weather may not have been all that we hoped for but the tournament was undoubtedly a success,” said Tournaments Director James Hamblin. “To have over 1000 teams come together to compete was fantastic, and the high level of competition showed in each match. The level of play, combined with the wonderful facilities and nearly 200 college coaches in attendance scouting, made for a fantastic experience for players, coaches, and parents alike.”
