May 21st Waltham, MA, 2018; GPS would like to congratulate the 99 MA Elite White Boys who lifted the Massachusetts State Championship this weekend.
The team led by Drago Kazakov defeated Bolts ECNL 2-1 in a close final through goals from Ethan Schaefer and Andrew Crumbaker at MA Youth Soccer fields in Lancaster. The boys reached the final after wins over FC Stars ECNL (2-0) and a dramatic semi-final triumph over Liverpool MA on penalty kicks in the semis.
The title is notable as it is the first time a GPS Elite White team has lifted a State Championship. Established in 2016 as the ‘State Elite’ program, MA Elite White teams were designed to create another opportunity for players from throughout the GPS regions in addition to the MA Elite Red teams who are founder members of the New England Divisions of the National Premier League (NPL).
The 99 age group has been a tremendous one for GPS and this title is the 4th in 5th years for the club, with the MA Elite Red boys winning in 2017 and 2016 and GPS South winning in 2014.
“We are delighted to see the first State Championship of the year go to the 99 Elite White team after a tremendous campaign,” said GPS Premier Director Andy Prosser. “We are very proud of our development focus at the club and to have two outstanding teams at this age group is testament to the hard work put in by all the players and coaches at these ages over the years,” said Prosser.
Also in action at the weekend were the GPS MA Elite Red 99 Girls who were defeated by SS Select and GPS MA West Euro Girls who lost to Aztec in the 1999 and 2000 Girls State finals respectively.
Many more GPS teams will be in action June 2nd and 3rd in the U13-U17 State Cup Semi-Finals and Finals weekends.
