The GPS Pre-ID Boys 08 squad will be spending the final week of March in the warm Catalonian sun when they travel to the Mundialito being held in Costa Daurada from March 24th to April 1st.
The Mundialito, celebrating its 25th anniversary, is one of the largest International Football 7 tournaments in the world open to the 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 age groups. It brings together more than 5000 participants from over 300 clubs hailing from 50 countries.
The squad consists of 12 players, with the competition calling for 7 starters and 5 subs in order to participate.
GPS MA will be represented by Sheridan McNish, Matthew Droggitis, Matteo Sestito, Gavin Wesley, Jack Charchaflian, Chase Carrera, Alexander Erdos and Ethan Rabel. Synergy VT will be represented by Quin Rother. Ozan Blanton, Declan Sengbusch ad Adrian Villalpando of Chicago City SC, GPS Buffalo and GPS Oregon respectively will round out the squad.
The event is separated into 2 distinct phases of play. The opening phase will consist of a group stage format with the team’s final position dictating what knockout tournament they will participate in.
The GPS squad was drawn into group 21 in the 08 category. They are joined by 5 other teams; UD Las Palmas of the Canary Islands, AFC Australia, Muscat Football Academy of Oman, and the two Catalonian clubs Nastic de Tarragona and CE Constanti, all of whom will be hungry to make it into the top knockout bracket.
The Gold Tournament is reserved for the top teams from the group while the Silver Tournament is for the middle of the group teams. The remaining teams will then participate in the Bronze Tournament or the Fair Play Tournament.
Players and teams will arrive on Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th. March 25th will see the opening of group play which will last until the evening of the 28th. March 25th will also see an opening ceremony be performed complete with a parade as well as a live DJ.
Knockout round play be spread out across 3 days. The opening fixtures of the round will take place on the 29th with the quarterfinals and semifinals taking place on the 30th.
Finals will be played on the final day of the event with teams departing Catalonia on April the 1st.
The Pre-Id program serves as the first step to GPS’ Elite Player Pathway program. This program is aimed at selected players in the 08 and 09 age group that have been selected based on their performance, attitude and level of ability. The Pre-ID program provides them with supplemental training and games in order to help them reach their peak potential.
