We are delighted to announce that five GPS Massachusetts players have been selected to represent Team USA at the FC Bayern Youth Cup in Munich.
Alfonso De Vito of Newton, Jack Cloherty of Wellesley, Aidan Farwell of Scituate, Harrison Sprofera of Medfield and Matthew Bilan of Acton were selected after impressing at the FC Bayern National Team Camp in Rock Hill. All five play for the GPS Elite Red 2002 team.
These players will travel from Boston to Munich on the weekend of May 10th, where they will spend several days partaking in a variety of training sessions before capping the event off with the FC Bayern Youth Cup finals to be held in the home of FC Bayern, the Allianz Arena.
FC Bayern coaches Klaus Augenthaler and Egon Coordes were on site in South Carolina to help evaluate players and to name the squad that will represent Team USA at the Youth Cup event. The FC Bayern Youth Cup, which is in its seventh year is a U16 Boys event that sees teams from around the World come to Munich to experience a once-in-a-lifetime weekend of training and exposure to the FC Bayern culture.
Players will participate in training sessions at the FC Bayern Campus run by FC Bayern’s coaching staff. A key part of the FCB Youth Cup is the interaction between players and individuals from vastly different cultures. During training sessions, players will not be grouped together by what team they represent, for example Team USA or Team Thailand, but will instead see diverse groups formed with players from all teams.
Participants will also go on tours of Munich as well as the club’s facilities while also getting the chance to see the final Bundesliga fixture of the season for FC Bayern held at the Allianz Arena against VfB Stuttgart on May 12th.
Following the training sessions and FC Bayern’s final fixture, each team will then participate in a round robin 7v7 tournament at the Allianz Arena with the winner being crowned FCB Youth Cup 2018 Champions.
“This is a really wonderful opportunity for the players selected,” said DOC Peter Bradley. “They should be extremely proud of themselves for their hard work. The FC Bayern Youth cup is an annual highlight and shows the impact of our partnership with FC Bayern.”
