Over 40 Staff Members Volunteer at Roxbury Campus

October 31st, 2019, Waltham, MA; Every year GPS regions across the nation participate in a Day of Service. This day is dedicated to assisting local charities and organizations through fundraising efforts and general volunteering.

For the second year in a row GPS Massachusetts dedicated their Day of Service to assisting Horizons for Homeless Children at their Roxbury, MA location.

GPS MA staff spent the previous two weeks reaching out to their network of family and friends in order to procure donations related to arts and crafts. Each GPS MA region was tasked with getting specific items donated in order for kits to be put together for students to use.

In addition to putting together arts and crafts kits, GPS MA staff worked to assemble numerous toys and equipment for the children to use from Ball Toss nets to play areas. Groups were also given a full tour of the Horizons facility, learning about their day to day functions as well as some of their future plans.

Horizons for Homeless Children is Massachusetts’ leading organization dedicated to addressing the issue of child homelessness through a variety of programs and initiatives.

President of Horizons, Kate Barrand, gave a short presentation explaining the work that Horizons undertakes such as their Early Education Centers aimed at setting kids on a path toward success at school  and their Playspace Program where children living in local shelters have the chance to just be kids and play for a few hours each week.

“There’s something especially wonderful about young people helping other young people. We are so grateful for the time the GPS volunteers spent organizing, sorting and building at our Roxbury campus yesterday. The impact of volunteer groups on the children we serve is immeasurable.” – Kate Barrand, President and CEO of Horizons for Homeless Children.
