July 23rd, Waltham, MA, 2019; The GPS National Team program will be represented in California this weekend as six teams compete in the prestigious San Diego Surf Cup.
Running for almost 40 years the Surf Cup is considered one of the top youth soccer tournaments in the USA and attracts more than 500 college coaches and scouts. Since 2016, GPS has sent two boys and girls National teams to the event during off years from International competition.
Kicking off on Saturday, the 2005, 2003, 2002 and 2001 Girls will compete at the SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside whilst the 2005 and 2003 Boys will play at Surf Cup Sports Park in Del Mar. Last year, GPS picked up two Championships at the event with the 2002 and 2004 Boys winning their divisions.
The teams are made up of a players selected from the GPS National Team Camp held this past February in South Carolina with coaches coming from throughout the GPS network of clubs.
Some of the teams facing GPS include Eastside FC 2003 Boys (Washington State Champions), LA Breakers ECNL 2005 Girls (California South State Cup Finalists), San Jose Surf 2005 Boys (ranked #14 in Nation) and Utah Soccer Alliance 2002 Girls (ranked #14 in Nation).
The opportunity to compete against the top clubs on the West coast dovetails well with the club’s bi-annual trips to some of Europe’s elite events. With much of the GPS membership being East Coast based, players are exposed to college coaches from the West Coast as well as teams they are unlikely to face in their regular tournament calendar.
“The Surf Cup has become a staple of the GPS summer program and provides our players and coaches with terrific competition year on year,” said GPS National Team program director Tommaso Trevisan. “Last season was our best performance yet as we picked up two titles and we hope we can collect some more silverware this year,” added Trevisan.
