May 20th, 2019, Waltham, MA; In February, ten 2003 Boys were selected at the GPS National Team Camp to represent Team USA at the FC Bayern Youth Cup.
This past Sunday, those ten players hoisted GPS’ first ever FC Bayern Youth Cup title following a 1-0 victory over Germany.
The FC Bayern Youth Cup is a 7v7 tournament held at the Allianz Arena in Munich that sees 9 teams from 8 countries compete.
Team USA started the competition with a strong group stage taking all 3 points off of Germany and Singapore before drawing with the squad from Nigeria.
In addition to lifting the FC Bayern Youth Cup trophy, goalkeeper Nikola Antic (GPS Massachusetts) put together a highlight reel in net throughout the tournament earning himself the Best Goalkeeper Award whilst Wallison Gabriel (GPS NASA) walked away with the competition’s Top Scorer Award.
Outside of the tournament, players had the opportunity to practice at Saebener Strasse, the official home of the FC Bayern Munich 1st team, with both GPS and FC Bayern staff.
Players from all the teams were encouraged to intermingle and get to know one another putting an emphasis on the cultural value of the trip. An Intercultural Night event was held on Day 2 of the trip where each country presented something about their home and lifestyles.
One afternoon saw the center of Munich taken over by the players as their sightseeing trip through the city ended with a freestyle juggling competition.
A day prior to lifting the trophy on the field themselves, Team USA watched FC Bayern’s final match day game against Eintracht Frankfurt with the Bavarian club in need of a positive result of some sort. A decisive 5-1 win saw Munich lift their 7th straight Bundesliga title, finishing 2 points ahead of their rivals Dortmund.
All of the players who represented Team USA were selected from the GPS National Team Camp held in February that sees 400+ players from throughout the GPS network compete.
