Early Development League - GPS Massachusetts

Formed in 2015, the GPS Early Development League (EDL) program is split into three seasons – Fall, Winter and Spring. The structure of our program is designed to ensure players can develop their skills, whilst increasing comfort and confidence as well. The program design has been based upon research and recommendations by the US Soccer Federation with their new player development initiatives.

Practices:             All EDL practices will follow the 'Play – Practice – Play' model. This exciting new format has been designed and developed by US Soccer to create a player- centered approach to coaching. The concept of play-practice-play is to allow young players to experience the game and game-like situations as much as possible. Practices will begin with a ‘play’ element, followed by ‘practice’ and then ending with more ‘play’. More information will follow in our first newsletter.

GPS have also designed a proprietary player development plan, which specifies clear topics that coaches will focus on each week at practice. More information can be found here.

Games:                 EDL teams will play in four separate festival style events through the course of the season (Fall and Spring). At each festival, teams will play 2 games which will be 30 minutes in length (3x10 minute periods). This format allows for our dedicated team of coaches to control the competitive environment to ensure it provides both a positive, as well as developmentally beneficial, setting for the players to enjoy the games.

Each phase of our programming provides a progressive pathway onto the next.

  • Fall (September-November): 4v4 Festival Games, No Goalkeeper, Small Goals. End of season Jamboree will introduce the 5v5 format, with Goalkeepers. This environment encourages improved ball skill development as players will get more touches on the ball. In turn, this helps improve confidence and a players comfort level in this game environment.

  • Winter (January – March): Indoor futsal. One Winter Jamboree. ‘Futsal’ is an indoor form of soccer, using slightly smaller and weighted soccer balls. This will be played indoor on gym surfaces (players cannot wear cleats, but either sneakers or futsal shoes). The speed of the game is increased due to the change in surface, this helps players continue to focus on developing ball control and speed in decision making.

  • Spring (April-June): 5v5 Festival Games, with a Goalkeeper throughout the entire season. Moving into the Spring season will see our players progress to 5v5 and introducing a goalkeeper. The goals will be bigger, and this now becomes a preparation for U9 soccer, where players will be playing 7v7.

Players can sign up for the full year or for the fall, winter and spring season's individually at a cost of $300 per season or $900 for the year.
